Botswana, officially the Republic of Botswana, is a landlocked country located in southern Africa bordered by South Africa, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Similar to its neighbor, Namibia, Botswana is one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world, with its total population being just above two million people. This lies largely with the fact that the vast Kalahari Desert, resplendent in its red soils, dominates much of the southern and western reaches of the country, making for a meager existence. The desert is punctured by the Okavango River that flows in from the north and spills over the Kalahari plains, giving rise to a vast wilderness area, the Okavango Delta, that stretches eastwards along the Chobe River into the verdant Chobe National Park to the country’s border with Zimbabwe. Known the world over as one of the premier wildlife destinations on the African continent, in particular for its incredible amount of protected land, with nearly 40% of its total land area formally conserved, Botswana is a country not to be missed and is arguably one of the most complete safari destinations out there!
